Hello my sweethearts! Since the voting is so close in the poll, the exchange (sign ups start this Friday on eljay but I will make a separate post regarding that) will be both MayDay and General so you can include May Day prompts with your regular ones.
Valentine's Day Challenge fics should be in within two weeks so please get yours in (Category- Challenges- Valentine's Day 2012 Disguised Affections) before then :)
I've had a few emails recently about changing pen-names. I will only change a pen name of a published Author. I receive about thirty requests per day and I just (and neither do the other admins) don't have the time to search usernames and change them. However, if you are a published author and want a new name, please email us by using the contact feature at the bottom of this page.
Much Love MM xoxo
p.s I will be away on hols for three weeks and the Enchanted Admin email will be on hols too :D any queries should be posted in the news, in whichever article is at the top.
Have a wonderful holiday, MM! <3 Thanks for your hard work and wonderful stories, you and all the other website witches! ^_^
(Wish I could get over my cowardice and publish something.)
phantomflame, I did it :-) You can do it too!
I don't want to rock the boat, but as a beta, I have to ask: What's wrong with panties? I understand the issue with anyways since that's incorrect English, but my "Oxford Advanced Learner's Dictionary" has panties as a perfectly valid word for both British and US English and gives it as an alternative to knickers. I'd like to hear your take on this so I can explain to writers why you don't allow this word.
Well other than it's kind of gross...actually it's not just kind of gross it's seriously gross it always makes me think of an old man sitting at his computer going 'take off your panties' lol now you'll never think of panties the same way again. Plus underwear or knickers just sounds nicer and can you see Lucius Malfoy saying 'take off your panties' if he had a long moustache and was twirling it maybe lol
Plus it's not really hard to change a word with the replace function :) If anyone complains tell them to email me and I'll give them a nice detailed explanation lol
Hahahhahhaa! Okay, thanks for ruining that word for me now, too. I'll never get both those disgusting visuals out of my mind if I see that word. So, a job well done. ;) Do you think Lucius would twirl his moustache with Tipper? XD
Well, I actually said that they weren't obliged to post here if they didn't agree with the rules, but that I would ask what precisely your problem was with that word since I was curious myself about that as well.
Nah, I can handle that myself. No need to bother you with insipid emails. It's your site; you decide what you find okay and what not. Besides, trust me, it wasn't just this word that I had to debate about with this person. They had more serious issues, regarding Stuness, whiny!Hermione, one-dimensional OCs, plotlines being all over the place and a huge temper when I tried to carefully say that something might needed to be changed "somewhat". *sighs*
Thanks Jodes. I'll never say knickers again without thinking of dirty old men.
Panties or knickers, huh? I'm away from GE for a week and this is what I find? I admit, in my earlier stories I used 'panties' as that's what we gross American's call them, but I try to change it to knickers now. I actually think panties sounds okay for a toddler...'go pee in the potty, and don't forget to take down your panties', but not so much for adults, even though I admit to saying it now and then.
Frankly...underwear is what I'll use from now on.
And I admit I've tried to change all my male slacks to 'trousers' etc, and candy to 'sweets'.
But as I like to tell my relatives from the east coast, who make fun of the way I talk being from the mid-west (drinking 'pop' instead of soda, 'redding up' the table instead of 'clearing the table', 'sacks' instead of 'bags', etc) Just because I speak differently or use different words from them doesn't make ME incorrect or wrong.
It just makes me different. (Very different, perhaps even odd) but not necessarily wrong.
However, it would be wrong for Hermione to drink pop while redding up the table and clearing everything into a sack. VERY WRONG!
"I used 'panties' as that's what we gross American's call them" *ROFL about the gross Americans* AnneM, I think it may be an Aussie thing to have that association with the word panties; I've asked around and only Australians go "ewww" so far when I mention the word. All US writers I've talked to shrug about it and find it a normal word. And I've got two UK contacts who do prefer knickers (because Americans don't use that word and of course their English is the only correct English) but they didn't have the dirty old men association with panties either. Then again, that's only two so it's not a statistically valid result.
dax...are you going to make a sciencitific study? How funny. (Four out of Five Gross Americans say they prefer 'fruit of the loom' panties over 'hanes' panties...)
As I said, I've always used 'underwear' myself, but I've written panties and saw nothing wrong with it either, but it we must omit it for the sake of this site, then we must adhere to the rules, aye? I have no trouble being a rule follower, and if your writers don't want to adhere to the rules, kick them to the curb. (do they call it a curb?)
We all have things that irk us. I hate when writers call Hermione 'Mione'. Where in the Potter books is she called that atrious nickname, except where Ron has his mouth full of food?
Oooh, sighs dreamily. Do you think I'd get a research grant for that? XD
Well, I only had a recent one who made a problem of basically everything. The other three I beta for don't mind omitting it. And I hate "Mione", too. I cringe whenever I read it and then remind myself I'm only the beta and not the author, but I swear it makes my fingers itch to change it. I do tend to comment on it though.
It's even worse when I see Voldemort being referred to as "Voldy" and said person who calls him that doesn't die a horrible, slow death immediately. A lot of fics on FFnet have that issue. Same goes for Sevvie, Lucious (without it being one typo) and I think I even saw a Drake once instead of Draco. *shivers*
I think a little part of me dies everytime I read someone write Draco as Drake or Dray, I've even read a story where Hermione was called 'Mi' or 'Mya' which made me want to hit a thing or two. *shudders*
And as an English person I do find I use either knickers or underwear, but I have no proem with saying panties. I just wouldn't use the word regularly. :P Also, have a good holiday MM, and I hope you come back feeling refreshed and stress-free.
Dax, you made me laugh. And I'm glad you and Obsidian (hi!) agree with me on the Mione thing. I hate the 'Drake' thing, too.
